The heart of a story is change: characters changing themselves and their world makes readers turn pages, especially in romance when internal and external growth is the story’s core. The harder the change is for the protagonist in (or out of) love, the deeper readers fall into the narrative. In this workshop, we’ll learn about how change is related to stakes, and how conflict fuels these stakes and is the engine for the romantic arc. This gives meaning to your plot and tangible form to your theme.

Through hands-on sessions that use your own stories, we’ll learn how to know your romantic protagonists as real humans and weave conflict into every aspect of their journey so they stick in readers’ hearts. Each student can work on an existing work-in-progress or bring a story idea to develop.

Week 1: Knowing Character-
Crafting characters through backstory: how to build the spine of characters through backstory

Week 2: Revealing Character-
Learn from romance classics and bestsellers how backstory is the key to infusing your story with emotion and making it impossible to put down

Week 3: Conflict as Story Fuel-
Generate meaningful story by tying conflict into how the characters define themselves and what they need to overcome to survive

Week 4: Conflict in Narrative-
Pacing, story arc, setting, and dialogue and how they relate to conflict and change
